    Anchorages and Hikes —

    To the Gulf Islands

    in COVID Times

David and Janet Williams      s/v Fanuei Valiant 40

After the Canadian Border opened in late summer, David and Janet traveled north to the Gulf Islands on their Valiant 40 Fanuei to revisit in COVID times many of the nooks and anchorages with good hiking opportunities. They will share some of their favorite spots, good anchorages for storms and sunsets, and the border COVID protocols they encountered. Additionally, they will share some of the lesser used anchorages closer to Seattle they use for shorter cruises.

Preparing Your Cruiser for Offshore Racing – Pacific NW Offshore Adventure

    Nathan and Vanessa Kundtz

    s/v Equilibrium Beneteau 393

Like many cruisers Nathan and Vanessa had never taken their Beneteau 393 any further west than Victoria – but often dreamed of bigger water. Last year, amidst doldrums of COVID isolation, they decided to put together a campaign that would take them from inshore cruising to offshore racing and ultimately a First in Class finish (Cruising Class) in the Pacific NW Offshore Race. The experience was incredible! And something they plan to repeat in 2022. Nathan and Vanessa will share their experience in planning and preparation with an eye towards encouraging other race-curious cruisers to join them in 2022.  Topics covered will be of interest to local racers who may be thinking of upping their game and trying an offshore race as well as cruisers thinking of doing the outside of Vancouver Island. Certain to be a few pearls of wisdom for everyone. They will discuss boat and crew preparation, training for offshore racing, and their experiences transiting down the Washington coast to Ilwaco for the start of the race then racing back up the coast and down the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the finish off Port Angeles.

    Ice, Germs and Fire –

    Irene’s Double-Handed Circumnavigation

    Ginger and Peter Niemann

    s/v Irene Herreshoff 50' Ketch

Ginger and Peter sailed around the world aboard their ketch Irene (homeport Ballard).  They took an eastabout route in the Northern Hemisphere via the Northwest Passage, Europe and SE Asia. They left Ballard in 2016, completed the Northwest Passage in 2017 (the ice part) and then sailed the eastern seaboard of the US, crossed the North Atlantic and cruised the Baltic and Mediterranean seas. COVID hit the world while they were in Turkey, and they decided to try to sail home directly and as quickly as possible via the Suez Canal, Indian Ocean and North Pacific (the germs part). They found themselves in the Red Sea in high summer (the fire part) and did indeed (despite surprises and misadventures) return home to the Salish Sea in August 2021. This is their story.
