Rookie Rally is moving to webcast! Instructor Bruce Van Deventer will be teaching the course online using Webex. Due to Covid-19, the on-the-water portion of the course may not occur.

Come and join us and learn the rules and skills to race sailboats!

Corinthian Yacht Club offers several ways to help you get started sailboat racing or brush up on your skills. The Rookie Rally Educational series provides a solid foundation of racing skills via classroom instruction, hands-on exercises, and on-the-water activities. It is primarily a classroom course with one-on-the water session. Our educational committee members are also glad to meet with you to help you work towards your racing goals.

Bruce Van Deventer will be leading this educational series. Bruce is an experienced keelboat and dinghy racer, competing in everything from club races to international and world championships. He is also an experienced race officer and currently campaigns a 505 and until recently, a Melges 24.

    What this course includes:

Tuesday, April 28: Welcome to the Racecourse;  Walk through a typical race, handicap racing, one design, distance vs buoy races, paperwork/organizational requirements, conduct of a race per the racing rules of sailing, reading sailing instructions, starting sequence, and basic rules.

Tuesday, May 5: Starting & Upwind Legs; Rules during starting, finding the favored end of the line, standard starting tactics, the advantaged side of the course vs the advantaged side of the starting line, rules when sailing to windward, and at the weather mark.

Tuesday, May 12: Finishing & Downwind Legs; Downwind angles, gybing on wind shifts, rules when sailing downwind, leeward mark rounding rules and tactics, favored end of the finish line, rules when finishing.

Tuesday, May 19: Boat Speed Basics; Foils above and below the water, balance, main, jib, and rig controls, windward sail trim in light, medium, and heavy air, downwind trim, how to read a tuning guide, basic tuning for keelboats.

    On-the-water Training: TBA

We plan to have one on-the-water practice session (TBD) at Shilshole Marina or on Lake Washington at Leschi at the end of the series. We will also provide you with the opportunity to come out and help the Race Committee aboard the Committee Boat on a weeknight race, which puts you in the center of the action!

For this course you will need appropriate sailing gear, including a PFD, and basic sailing skills. This is a great opportunity to expand your skill base, move to another position on the boat, or start racing your own boat!

Recommended textbooks to purchase for the class:

Getting Started in Sailboat Racing by Adam Court and Richard Stearns

Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing by Dave Perry

CYC is offering an opportunity for women to learn and build camaraderie among female sailors of all levels of experience, from newbies to advanced.

Classes are held Friday evenings on boats at Shilshole Marina that belong to CYC members. We will be meeting at assigned boats between 5:30 and 6:00 pm. Each week following the classes we will meet for a social at CYC. Dinner is included and there is a no host bar available.

    Women's Learn to Sail - Fridays May 1, 8, and 15

This is a great course to see if sailing is for you. It is also an opportunity for experienced sailors to get out on the water with other women to share your knowledge and further develop your skills.

In this course you will learn some of the basics – parts of the boat, safety, basic knots and where to use them, getting the boat ready, getting sails up, SAILING, wind direction, and teamwork.

The only requirements are enthusiasm and non-marking shoes. If you have a PFD you are welcome to bring it, but the boats will have them available for use. Wear warm layers and be prepared for rain as the weather can shift quickly. The temperature on the water feels much cooler than on land, especially when you factor in the wind.

    $75 for members / $150 for non-members

Please note we are not able to prorate to accommodate missed sessions.

Online registration is open to members in February and opens to non-members in April.
Class sizes are limited so sign up early to reserve your spot!
