Are you scared to touch your radar? Afraid you’ll blow something up or let the “magic smoke” out? Not sure what you’re looking at? Never turn it on until you’re in a thick fog bank?

Retired US Navy Master Chief Electronics Technician (Submarines) Mark Philiposian will be taking the theories we learned in previous seminars out on the Sound with a live Zoom call to put them into practice. We will take the fear and uncertainty out of operating your radar and show you what happens when you:

    • Adjust gain
    • Change scales
    • Adjust STC/FTC/Rain/Sea controls
    • Change between Course Up, North Up, and Heading Up
    • Track targets using basic ARPA plotting aids
    • Use radar (and soundings) to confirm your primary position source accuracy

We will be live from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (possibly a bit longer if we’re really having fun!)

A virtual Monday Lunch - please register for this event - you will receive an email with directions for joining the Virtual Monday Lunch.

    General information about GoToMeeting:

    GoToMeeting Set Up

We are starting the meeting at 12:00 PM to make sure everyone is connected by 12:30 PM when we start the meeting.

This is a short (3:36 minute) video on how to join a GoToMeeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95dRdnMMgbQ

You can use a laptop with a microphone and a speaker. A laptop with a camera is preferred but not required.  The Google Chrome browser is preferred but it will work with most other browsers. A tablet or a smartphone also work. Although GoToMeeting will work with just a browser, you will have greater control over your participation if you download the GoToMeeting app to your laptop, tablet or smartphone. Click on this link for more detail: https://global.gotomeeting.com/install/

    Headset

A headset is not required but I found that using a one with a microphone minimizes background noise, improves your audio and avoids audio feed-back loops. Amazon.com offers a range of such headsets both for USB connectors and for regular audio connectors.

    Screen Sharing

The Chair can choose to share his/her screen to show documents/presentations to participants. The Chair (or the Organizer) can also invite a participant to show his or her screen during the meeting.

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and MMSI numbers.  Jeremy Boynes will describe how DSC works to call another boat rather than using channel 16.  He will also describe how to get an MMSI number from the FCC or Boat US so the VHF can send out a distress call with the boat's position and owner's information in it by pushing the guarded red button on the radio.
