CYC is proud to host Maiden, a 58-foot ocean racing yacht that carried the first all-female crew to participate in the Whitbread Round the World race, finishing second in class. Maiden and her newest female crew will visit Shilshole for this one-night-only event.
She will be docked at I-Dock in Shilshole Marina, and the crew will be giving free tours of the boat from 11:00-4:00 pm on Sunday August 11th and 4:00 - 6:00 pm on Tuesday August 13th. (For more information see the event page here.) Boat tours are free, no reservations required.
After the tours, the crew will head to CYC Clubhouse to give a talk and Q&A.
The history and significance of Maiden, from The Maiden Factor website:
"In 1989, the very idea of a competitive all-female sailboat crew was nearly inconceivable to the manly world of open-ocean yacht racing.... [Skipper] Tracy Edwards proved them wrong. When Maiden crossed the finish line of the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race she sailed into the record books carrying the first all-female crew to ever sail around the world. They had silenced their critics winning two legs and coming second overall; the best result for a British boat since 1977... Edwards was awarded the 1990 Yachtsman of the Year Award, the first woman ever to receive the accolade, and was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire."
The story of Maiden’s upstart and defiant run has all the elements of an epic adventure tale—50-foot waves, life and death drama, near-mutiny, thrilling victory—grounded in a perceptive group portrait of a team of courageous young women led by the remarkable Tracy Edwards. They pioneered the sport of long-distance racing for the women who followed.
"Now Maiden is on a world tour to raise awareness and funding for girls’ educational organisations through The Maiden Factor Foundation. 130 million girls around the world are currently denied an education and studies show that given 12 years of education, girls can change their futures, their communities and the world."
