Adventures Afloat & Aground, Speakers: Wendy Hinman & Garth Wilcox
Longtime CYC members Wendy Hinman and Garth Wilcox will share snippets from their adventures afloat and aground. After racing together for years, they sailed 34,000 miles aboard their 31-foot Tom Wylie-designed cold-molded wooden sailboat, Velella, which culminated in the hit book, Tightwads on the Loose, instead of divorce. Prior to their adventures together, Garth sailed around the globe with his family and managed to survive a shipwreck, as well as threats from storms, pirates, gun boats, mines and thieves, a broken rig, scurvy and starvation. Garth learned techniques for how to McGyver his way around the world, which are detailed in the book Sea Trials: Around the World with Duct Tape and Bailing Wire. As a professional naval architect, Garth Wilcox has applied his skills to designing his own sailboat, which Garth and Wendy are building in their backyard workshop on Bainbridge Island. It's a 38-footer, featuring design elements you won't find anywhere else. Come hear a bit about their endeavors and pick up a signed copy to read the rest.
