Preparing Your Cruiser for Offshore Racing – Pacific NW Offshore Adventure
Nathan and Vanessa Kundtz
s/v Equilibrium Beneteau 393
Like many cruisers Nathan and Vanessa had never taken their Beneteau 393 any further west than Victoria – but often dreamed of bigger water. Last year, amidst doldrums of COVID isolation, they decided to put together a campaign that would take them from inshore cruising to offshore racing and ultimately a First in Class finish (Cruising Class) in the Pacific NW Offshore Race. The experience was incredible! And something they plan to repeat in 2022. Nathan and Vanessa will share their experience in planning and preparation with an eye towards encouraging other race-curious cruisers to join them in 2022. Topics covered will be of interest to local racers who may be thinking of upping their game and trying an offshore race as well as cruisers thinking of doing the outside of Vancouver Island. Certain to be a few pearls of wisdom for everyone. They will discuss boat and crew preparation, training for offshore racing, and their experiences transiting down the Washington coast to Ilwaco for the start of the race then racing back up the coast and down the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the finish off Port Angeles.
