Cruising

CYC organizes cruises that provide an opportunity for social weekend cruising, create an environment to exchange cruising knowledge, and provide opportunities for families to enjoy cruising.

Cruises can always be added to the CYC calendar. Is there someplace you think it would be fun to visit with friends? Join us and organize and lead a cruise.  Organizers choose destinations, themes, and activities.

To help organize cruises or receive additional information on CYC Cruising,  contact Mike McGuane, CYC Fleet Captain Cruise.

    • Mystery Bay
    Register

All but hidden on the west side of Marrowstone Island, Mystery Bay State Park offers a great escape for visitors arriving by land or by water. Boaters can dock or lay anchor and stroll along the grassy and gravelly shoreline or enjoy the inlet’s pristine waters. Take along a kayak or paddle board for a day of recreation. Take in the Olympic mountain views from one of six picnic tables. Cook up those oysters and clams in one of three fire rings, (fires allowed during daylight hours) and enjoy an island sunset before heading back to your boat.

    The Plan

Anchoring Notes: Hail the CYC Raft-Up Master on VHF 68 as you are approaching Mystery Bay or call Ralph (206 920 2667) or Karol (206 735 9461) The raft-up will be larger boats in the center with smaller boats on the out side. If you do not want to raft up, you can anchor on your own or Mystery Bay State Park has mooring buoys and linear dock space, if available, first come first served.

Mystery Bay Memorial Day Events and Attractions

    Fort Flagler Historical State Park

    https://parks.state.wa.us/508/Fort-Flagler
Tour and explore a significant coastal defense fort established more than a century ago to guard the entrance to Puget Sound. Fort Flagler activities include hiking, boating, kite-flying, beach exploration, saltwater fishing, clam digging and crabbing. Fort Flagler is approximately 2 miles from Mystery Bay (about a 15 minute dinghy ride) and there is a dinghy dock to park your boat while you go exploring.

    Nordland General Store

The Mystery Bay State Park is located approximately one half mile north of the Nordland General Store (which also faces Mystery Bay) on Flagler Road (SR 116). The staff is welcoming, and it really is the center of the island.  An astounding selection smoked salmon, oysters, and ice cream.  Great beer and wine selection, and off course, they have ice to keep your cocktails nicely chilled. They also have a dinghy dock that is accessible when not at a minus tide.

    CYC On-Shore Potluck

    Saturday May 26 @ 5:30pm
Dingy the whole 80 yards over to the Mystery Bay State Park dingy dock and bring your favorite specialty dish. They have fire pits for smores, so bring your smores kit and some firewood as well. Also, pack your lawn chairs if you have some. BYO plates, silverware, glasses, etc.

Mystery Bay Farm - FARMSTEAD TOUR

    https://www.mysterybayfarm.com /
    Sunday May 27 @ 10:30am
Come learn about homestead-style self-sufficiency. Guests will tour the dairy as well as the greater homestead where they will explore examples of: perennial silvapastures, nutrient management, farm and infrastructure design and layout, water catchment and storage, solar hot water heating, integrated organic gardens and orchards (fruit and nut), creating animal forage and more. Tour is approximately 2 hours and includes full cheese tasting.

    NordlandGeneral Store "Tractor Days" Parade

Sunday May 27 - Approximately 1pm (Island Time)
Every Memorial Day weekend, Marrowstone Island residents of all ages gather for Tractor Days. The celebration includes a little bit of everything, from large farming tractors and vintage machines to small children’s toys. Festivities are held all afternoon, with the Nordland General Store at the center of activity.

It’s the largest low tide in June! Perfect for exploring the exposed shores of Blakely Rock.

    The Plan

On Saturday afternoon, we'll raft up in snug, historic Blakely Harbor where we can enjoy the lights of downtown Seattle.  That evening, we'll get together and share appetizers for dinner.

Sunday late morning, we'll dinghy over to Blakely Rock to have a potluck brunch on the exposed beach at low tide.  Then it's off to explore the island - looking for rocks to avoid in the next race or searching for intertidal creatures.   Crabs, starfish, eels - who knows what we can find!  It’s fun for the whole family!  Bring Dad to show him a side of Puget Sound that few get to see.

Connect with other CYC Members while you are off cruising in the San Juan and Gulf Islands in July.

It would be fun to hook up to spend a few evenings socializing, and maybe do some exploring together this summer.

Shared experiences on the water will strengthen our friendships.

The date and location below are just the starting point. More dates and locations to follow as ideas come in.

    Location

Anchor and raft up at Skull Island, West Sound, Orcas Island (location subject to change based on input from participants pre-cruise).

    The Plan

Let’s get together via the Cruising Forum, ListServe, e-mail, and the Second Thursday Cruising socials to talk about our summer cruising plans and arrange one or more dates and locations to rendezvous together!

Monday July 9 will find WIND DANCER, Chris McMuldroch and Jennifer Lathrop's Tartan 3800, in the San Juan Islands at Skull Island, West Sound, Orcas Island. Please join us to anchor and raft up at Skull Island (location subject to change based on input from participants pre-cruise). Send us an e-mail at mcmuldroch@comcast.net to add your name to the rendezvous, and we will be on the lookout for you!  We can meet up at other dates and places in the San Juans and Gulf Islands from July 9 through July 31.  WIND DANCER is likely to make stops at Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, Sidney, Stuart Island, Poets Cove, Ganges, Montague Harbor, Nanaimo, and maybe cross over to the Sunshine Coast.  Will you be out cruising?  Would you like to meet up with WIND DANCER or other CYC friends?  If your cruising will be in June, August, or even September, share your proposed cruise plans with the cruiser’s group.  We can see which CYC boats can meet up in the islands this summer.

Remember to always fly your CYC burgee so others will easily know who else is a CYC member. Even if you are in an anchorage with no plans to met up with other members. Spontaneous meetings can be some of the best.
